I've been on training the last 1.5 days on how to "counsell" someone. This "counsell" is more in the sense of giving performance feedback and development points than anything else.
We got to got to a hotel, eat yummy food often and do the training. Part of it consisted of role play on giving negative feedback to people which I found very beneficial. It is amazing the role that positive feedback in the midst of negative feedback makes. This is not to say that you make up positive feedback that doesn't exist or be false about it, otherwise the counsellee will feel patronised and will see through it for exactly what it is - but by not only focusing on the negative feedback goes a long way. Only 7% of the message the person receives is the words. The other 93% is the voice, tone and way in which it is given. Pretty interesting and valuable stuff...
