At 3.50am I was roused out of sleep by my cellphone alarm going off. Who wakes up at 3.50am? Someone who is catching the 6am flight to Port Elizabeth…
There was a beautiful berg wind blowing when my parents fetched me from my place. By the time we arrived at the airport it was cold and windy.
A work colleague and I flew down together. We went in one of the small planes – but it still had the jet engine and not the propeller so it wasn’t too bad. However, when we stepped off the plane we were mentally figuring out whether we had enough warm clothes for our stay! Wow, it was double cold!
We went to collect our luggage and imagine our surprise when we found that we were the only two people on board who had luggage for collection!!!!! That was a first!
We were looked after really well by the staff at the terminal and we got to have a tour of the PE harbour as well as Port of Ngqura – the new state of the art harbour that is being built. Hearing and seeing some of the structural things that have been done at the Port of Ngqura were amazing. Engineers are pretty impressive. It is amazing how on the one hand we are at the mercy of the sea but on the other, when you work with the sea, great things can be done.
At the end of the day we had an early supper at Spur, with the sea in the background, work problems left in Durban, a good milkshake and steak for supper, good female company – what a pleasure! I’m so blessed to have these opportunities to travel…
